The tale of the midnight flame...

There is an old story about a candle that once burned every night in the hotel’s Fireside Parlor.

It belonged to a longtime guest who spent her evenings there, always sitting in the same chair beside the fireplace with a book in her lap. When she left the hotel on evening, she asked the staff to keep the candle burning until she returned.

She never came back.

Years later, a housekeeper noticed a candle burning in the parlor shortly after midnight. She assumed someone had forgotten to extinguish it and blew out the flame.

The next morning, it was burning again.

After that, it began appearing from time to time, always in the same white candlestick and always sometime after midnight. No one could ever find who had lit it.

The strangest part is that the candle never seems to get any shorter.

Some nights, guests say they have even seen the faint outline of a woman sitting in the old chair beside it, quietly turning the pages of a book.

When they look again, the chair is empty.

But the candle is still burning.
